Waukee Mayor, Others Voice Support of Multi-Million Dollar Project Through Letter to the Editor

Bill Peard was among 13 local city mayors who signed the letter submitted to the Dallas County News, encouraging community support for a $16.85 referendum needed to finance a new Dallas County administrative building and jail.

Thirteen local mayors have spoken out through a letter to the editor, voicing their approval of a proposal to build a new Dallas County administration and law enforcement facility.

On Aug. 6, a $16.85 million referendum to finance the project will go before voters.

Meanwhile, the letter submitted to the Dallas County News contains the signatures of more than a dozen local mayors, including Waukee Mayor Bill Peard.

Here's an excerpt from the letter:

We recognize our dramatic population growth, which has more than doubled since 1997, has outpaced the county’s office space and is squeezing its ability to perform vital services. Also, we respect the thorough and well-reasoned approach that Dallas County leaders have taken in reviewing a number of different building plans and construction sites to select the one that they believe best serves the needs of our residents.

We know that our county officials have worked hard to make the best use of technology to delivery services efficiently and effectively, but they simply need more office space to serve a population that has more than doubled since 1997.

The proposed 91,150 square-foot facility will hold the Dallas County treasurer, recorder, assessor, veterans affairs, board of supervisors, human resources, auditor, operations administration, IT and sheriff/jail administration staff, the newspaper reported. Planning and development, environmental health and human services will remain in downtown Adel.

The new building would be constructed on a site in east Adel on the north side of Highway 6 that the county already owns.

More information about the study process and the proposed administration and public safety facility is available at www.dallascountyfuture.com.
