The Ashworth Theatre Company will hold classes for students in grades kindergarten though 12 this winter.
Registration is open now for the Ashworth Theatre Company's winter workshops. The classes, for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, will cover beginner basics, do-it-yourself theatre, and improvisation. Young participants will recharge, re-energize, and rehearse while having fun and learning theatre skills. The workshops are One Morning Only for grades K-2, DIY Theatre for grades 3-6, and All About Improv! for grades 7-12. The K-6 classes will be held on Jan. 5, 2013 and the improv class will be Jan. 18, 2013 at ArtsCentral in Waukee. The Ashworth Theatre Company's inaugural summer session comes to a close today with two productions showcasing the student actors' hard work.
When Mackie and Violet Saylor said they were going to start their own theatre company, they weren't kidding. The two sisters from Waukee founded the Ashworth Theatre Company, a children's theater troupe where there are no small parts, only small actors. Registration for the company's inaugural summer session for students in kindergarten through 10th grade was maxed out, said Violet Saylor, with more than 50 young actors participating in the week-long camps that began last Monday. The summer season closes today with performances by each age group. The elementary students performed, "Alice...Again!" Mackie and Violet Saylor have had a lifelong love of theater and the arts and now they're passing it on to others through the Ashworth Theatre Company.
For Mackie and Violet Saylor, two sisters from Waukee, the theater is not just a hobby - it's much more than that. Mackie Saylor, 20, is a 2010 graduate of Waukee High School and is studying musical theater at the Webster Conservatory in St. Louis, Mo. Her sister, 17 year-old Violet, just graduated from Waukee High School and will attend Drake University in the fall to study stage directing and musical theater. Together the two have lofty aspirations for their future in theater. For now, they're building a foundation with the Ashworth Theatre Company.
