Editor's Note: As the year winds down, Waukee Patch is looking back at some of the stories that made you talk, cry, laugh or just scratch your head. ______________________________ By Jody Gifford This story first published Oct. 16. Court papers show Schade Creek Vineyard & Winery owner Kurt Schade has paid fines he accrued this summer after not complying with Waukee city ordinances. In June, the city of Waukee filed a lawsuit against Schade, owner of Schade Creek Vineyard & Winery, for multiple violations of city ordinances. A judge ordered Schade to pay $750 in civil penalties. The case was closed on Aug. 27. At the center of the lawsuit is the outbuilding on the property that houses the winery. It's not in compliance with city code and …

Eight decades ago, the “Noble Experiment” was called off as a failure and Prohibition was repealed.
It’s National Repeal Day. And, what, you didn’t shop? Don’t worry, we have a list of places in Waukee where you can buy beers, wines and spirits to celebrate the anniversary of the end of Prohibition. But first, a bit of history about the “Noble Experiment” – Prohibition, that is. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union – Carrie Nation and that bunch – believed alcohol was the root of many, if not all, social ills. After many years of campaigning – and by campaigning, we mean tavern vandalizing, bottle smashing and generally riling up the whiskey-swilling masses – Congress on Jan. 16, 1919 passed the 18th Amendment outlawing alcohol and, presumably, putting an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness and poverty. That, of course, didn’t …

Waukee Patch will turn one on Thursday. Here are five of the most read stories from our first year in Waukee.
1. In August 2011, employees of the Happy Time Preschool & Daycare in the Point of Grace Church were handed their walking papers when the lead by ultra-conservative Pastor Jeff Mullen, decided to start its own child care entity. Employees were told they could reapply but in doing so would be required to sign a Christian Lifestyle Agreement that said employees should have "regular attendance at a Christian church, no sex outside of marriage, no homosexual conduct, no viewing of pornography, no drug or alcohol use, and no vulgar language." The directors of the former Happy Time Daycare overcame the obstacle and opened New Beginnings Daycare in September. A new, larger location is set to open in October. 2. In September, 14 year-old Taylor …

Schade Creek Vineyard & Winery and the city of Waukee have been butting heads for years. What will it take to resolve the situation?
Editor's Note: This story originally ran on Friday, June 22. We're featuring it again today in advance of the Tuesday meeting of the Waukee Planning & Zoning Board. In the days since Kurt Schade spoke to the Waukee City Council, one thing has become clear: the dispute between him and the city of Waukee is complicated. Schade, owner of the Schade Creek Vineyard & Winery, questioned council members Monday night about their intent to promote and develop the city of Waukee. He also pointed a finger at Councilman Mike Watts, suggesting that he had a personal vendetta against Schade and that his actions were preventing him from running his business. "Council members, it is very obvious Mr. Watts is using his power as a council person to carry …

Kurt Schade, owner of the Schade Creek Winery & Vineyard, says the Waukee City Council and one member, in particular, is preventing him from doing business in Waukee.
Kurt Schade, owner of the Schade Creek Winery & Vineyard, took to the podium during Monday's Waukee City Council meeting to complain about calls sending police to his property and about what he perceives as a personal grudge Councilman Mike Watts has against him. Schade told the council he had three questions. "Is it the purpose of the city council to represent all the citizens of Waukee?" Schade said. "Is it the purpose of the City Council to promote development, growth and business in the city of Waukee, and is it appropriate for members of the city council to use their position to conduct personal vendetta activities?" Watts was given the opportunity to respond at the meeting, but declined to comment at that time. He talked with Waukee …
