Desmund Adams, the Democratic candidate in Tuesday's special election for the District 22 Senate seat, praised his clean campaign in a message on his website today. Adams, a Clive businessman, lost to Republican Charles Schneider of West Des Moines 5,367 votes to 4,117 votes, according to unofficial returns. The late Sen. Pat Ward died in October while running for the seat, which prompted the special election. Adams said he hopes to remain involved in the process as a new type of Democrat who understands both business and social issues. Voters in Waukee, and parts of West Des Moines, Clive and Windsor Heights went to the polls today to settle the last campaign of the 2012 election season.
Republican Charles Schneider of West Des Moines won the special Senate District 22 election today, it appears in unofficial returns. Schneider carried Polk County with 2,861 votes, compared with Democrat Desmund Adams' 2,712 votes. In Dallas County, Schneider tallied 2,506 votes to 1,405 for Adams. The late Sen. West Des Moines City Councilman Charles Schneider has been named the new candidate for Senate District 22. Schneider was chosen from a pool of six candidates nominated at a special convention held Thursday night at the Republican Party of Iowa headquarters. Members of both the Polk and Dallas County GOP commitees were tasked with choosing a candidate to replace the late Sen. Pat Ward after she passed away Oct. 15 from a years-long battle with breast cancer. The late State Sen. Pat Ward, who died last month after voting began, could still be a winner in her last election. Ward passed away Oct. 15 after a three-year battle with breast cancer leaving voters asking what that means if she loses -- or wins. The answer: The votes for Ward and Democratic challenger Desmund Adams will be counted and released along with other race results on Tuesday. But, no winner will be declared and the election is void. Former candidate for Senate District 22 and conservative pastor Jeff Mullen released a statement today saying he will not seek the GOP nomination in the Dec. 11 special election, which will choose a candidate to replace the late Sen. Pat Ward. "While I am not seeking this position, I will continue to be a voice for Iowa citizens," Mullen said in his statement.
