The Waukee High School jazz band performed in the evening finals and received second place in Class 4A.
From the Waukee Schools website: Waukee Jazz I made the Iowa Jazz Championships evening finals last month and received second place in Class 4A. Outstanding soloists recognized were Justin Page - Alto Sax, Patrick Cunningham - Vibes, Ross Clowser - Guitar and Ryan Bernard - Drums. Ryan was also chosen as one of four top soloists for the entire day in Class 4A. Waukee Jazz 1 finished its record-breaking year on April 18 at the Des Moines Civic Center. The band performed a set of four songs, without any breaks, at the state competition. They started with a swing tune called “Tri-Bop,” by Bill Liston and then transitioned to a ballad called “Until Then, Farewell,” by Ryan Cullen, followed by a guitar feature called “Pensativa,” by Mike Crotty…

Submitted by the Waukee Jazz Band Program Waukee Jazz I, under the direction of Wayne Page, received first place in class 4A at the Iowa Jazz Championships held April 10, 2012 - topping off five consecutive years of top three finishes. The Iowa Jazz Championships showcases 60 of the state’s finest high school jazz ensembles. It is held in Des Moines every April and features 15 groups from each of the four Iowa high school classifications. All ensembles perform in the daytime competition, and the top two bands from each classification perform in the evening finals competition. The event was founded by Iowa jazz educators over thirty years ago and continues to be an important event on the Iowa high school music landscape each spring. This …
