Waukee Girl Scouts will set up shop a few times this weekend and in coming days so residents can place their cookie orders.
There's still time to put in your Girl Scout Cookies order. Scouts will be at the Waukee Fareway Store this Saturday, and at stores in neighboring cities this weekend. The Waukee cookie sales times and dates are: A new venue is the Jordan Creek Lowe's, 450 S. Jordan Creek Parkway in West Des Moines, where Scouts will take cookie orders from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Also, Girl Scouts will be selling cookies at the nearby Dahl's grocery store, 15500 Hickman Road in Clive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Sunday and again on March 16. You can find other Girl Scout cookie sale dates for the Dahl's location online. The girls will also be taking cookie orders at Jordan Creek Town Center. Waukee schools teams, clubs, classes and students can man the Salvation Army Red Kettle this holiday season at the Fareway Store.
The Waukee Community School District has its own Salvation Army Red Kettle (and bells) this year, according to the district's website. The kettle is located at the Waukee Fareway Store. Teams, clubs, classes and individual student groups may sign up and help a worthy cause, the district says. Running now through Dec. 23 the following hours are available to volunteer: Monday – Friday: 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays: closed Dec. 24: 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. To request a date and time, send an email to waukeeringsthebell@gmail.com. 'Tis the season for giving, and generous donation was discovered when counting Red Kettles in Iowa City. Closer to home in West Des Moines, a silver bar was found.
In Iowa City, volunteers discovered a $175 gold coin, generously dropped in a Red Kettle by a mystery donor. In Ankeny, volunteers found a silver bar – worth more than $34 at today's silver prices – was found. Stories like that warm the heart around the holiday season and offers a reminder to the rest of us to dig a little deeper to help the less fortunate. The Salvation Army's Red Kettle program is one way. Arvid Huisman, spokesman for the Salvation Army of Des Moines, said that or a number of years, the organization has found silver and gold in their kettles. Four Waukee businesses are now considered among the top workplaces in the country, according to results published in the Des Moines Register. The Register recently recognized 100 companies and organizations in Iowa as Top Workplaces 2012. These companies earned the distinction based solely on surveys about the workplace completed by their employees. Shoppers heart an Iowa-based grocery store, according to a survey of Consumer Reports' subscribers.
Fareway was named one of America's favorite grocery stores by subscribers of Consumer Reports, a publication that reviews and rates a variety of products. According to an Associated Press report, Iowa-based Fareway joined national chains Trader Joe's and Publix, and Wegmans, a grocer based in Rochester, N.Y., as subscribers favorites. About 24,000 people participated. Fareway was started in Boone in May 1938, according to the company's website. In 2011, the company opened its 100th location, and has expanded to Illinois, Minnesota and Nebraska, and more store openings are coming, according to the company's website.
