More Cases of Head Lice Reported at Eason Elementary

For the second time in the four weeks since school started, before- and after-school care officials at Eason Elementary have had to notify parents about cases of head lice.

For the second time in the few weeks since the start of the school year, parents of students in the before- and after-school care program at Eason Elementary were told of another outbreak of head lice among students. Gretchen Grevas Stanger, site supervisor of the before- and after-school care program at Eason, sent out an e-mail Tuesday alerting parents with kids in the program that there have been three cases of head lice reported this week. In the e-mail, Grevas Stanger wrote: "In the past two days, I have had 3 new cases of head lice reported to me by parents of children in the Before and After School program. We currently have the head lice 'health alert' sign posted near the sign-in/out table so that you are aware of the active cases…

Mr. Pollack, I see you are at it again! I wonder why you are makiing such a nuisance of yourself when you do not even reside in the Waukee, IA area. If we wanted an (overly) educated opinion, we would have sought you out. I admire your enthusiam on this topic, but feel your opinion is unwanted. Looks to me like you just anger people to the point of them (me) wanting more and more to go against …   more ›

Waukee School Officials Have No Plans to Begin Reporting Head Lice Cases

Waukee school officials say they're following the suggested procedures when it comes to reporting cases of head lice in schools.

With several reported cases of head lice at Eason Elementary this week, Waukee school officials say they will not notify parents when there is a case in a classroom. School officials say that's the recommendation of the Iowa Department of Public Health when it comes to informing parents of an infestation. According to a statement released this afternoon, the Waukee Community School District adheres to the Iowa Department of Public Health recommendations that include: The school district statement also says, the "Department of Health does not recommend parental notification when there is a case in a room. This goes back to assuming that head lice are in the community and schools at all times. Waukee Schools have provided classroom …

Cont... Also I am sure that this Richard is trying to be helpful but his research is not consistent with what we lived. I went through my daughters head each morning and found no bugs no eggs and no nits, she would come home from school consistently with 2 bug and 2 eggs on the left side of her head each day So as much as research says that lice is not easily shared my experience is it absolutely…   more ›

Head Lice Reported at Eason Elementary in Waukee

Parents of students affected by head lice are upset that the Waukee school district doesn't have a policy that they believe would prevent others from getting the pesky parasites.

When Wendy Marsh was shopping for back-to-school supplies, head lice treatment wasn't anywhere on her list.  But maybe it should have been.  Less than two weeks into the 2012-13 school year and Marsh's twins -- fifth-graders at Eason Elementary in Waukee -- have brought home head lice. On Monday, Gretchen Grevas, a site supervisor with the Waukee Family YMCA, sent out a health alert to parents of children in Eason's before-and-after-school program notifying them of an outbreak. "We have several cases of head lice in the Before & After School Program that have been reported to me already this school year," wrote Grevas. "We currently have the head lice 'health alert' sign posted near the sign-in/out table so that you are aware of the active…

I am a relatively new resident in Waukee. We moved to Iowa almost 2 years ago. I heard about the lice problem in the schools from neighbors--even before I had a school aged child. I was shocked to learn that the school does not have a policy in place to alert parents about lice outbreaks in their child's classroom. I am a former elementary school teacher. The county where I taught respected the …   more ›
