The Waukee boys cross country team finished in place at Saturday's state meet in Fort Dodge.
The Waukee boys cross country team finished in 7th place overall at the Iowa High School State Cross Country Championship in Fort Dodge on Saturday. The Waukee team finished with 214 points behind the team from Johnston that finished with 195 points. Dowling Catholic finished in first place with 60 points. Both the Waukee girls and boys cross country teams won their respective regional and district meets last Thursday in Waukee.
It was cold, it was wet, and it was windy, but both the Waukee girls and boys cross country teams were on a hot streak last week as they competed in their respective regional and district meets. The Waukee girls cross country team, coached by Heather Every, won the regional meet held last Thursday, Oct. 18, at Legacy Point Park in Waukee. Three Waukee girls received All Regional honors: Kayla Sabotin (JR) 5th place, Erika Lewis (SO) 7th place, and Rachel Brush (FR) 8th place. The remaining varsity girls placed as follows: Maddie Anderson (FR) 13th place, Brianna Young (SO) 16th place, Taylor Officer (SR) 19th place, and Jenny Brown (JR) 20th place. Classes may have just begun, but this year's boys' golf and girls' cross country teams are already gearing up, full season ahead.
Summer is over, but there’s still good golf to be played. Just ask the Waukee High School boys’ golf team. Head coach John Kontz said the graduation of Collin Foster and Brady Campbell (who placed first and third, respectively, in last year’s individual state meet), still has his team trying to figure itself out. "Right now, we still are finding our identity," Kontz said. "Last year, Collin and Brady were just natural leaders and the younger golfers followed whatever they set forth as a path. This year’s a little different." The 2011-2012 team may be young, but two freshmen, in particular, have been integral to the varsity team’s success.
