Jeff Kooistra resigned from his position as the Waukee city administrator Monday night amidst criticism that he wasn't doing enough to show progress on the Alice's Road project.
Editor's Note: As the year winds down, Waukee Patch is looking back at some of the stories that made you talk, cry, laugh or just scratch your head. This story originally ran on May 13, 2012. ___________ Waukee City Council members accepted City Administrator Jeff Kooistra’s resignation Monday evening, approving a severance package which continues his $122,300 annual salary for six months and continues his insurance into November. Additionally on Monday, council members unanimously appointed Development Services Director Brad Deets, a five-year city employee, as interim city administrator. The agreement also stipulates that neither party take any legal action against the other, or make any damaging statements about each other. Kooistra's…

Kurt Schade, owner of the Schade Creek Vineyard & Winery, says city officials don't want him to conduct business in Waukee - instead, they want his land.
To hear it from Kurt Schade, the city of Waukee is doing everything it can to keep his boutique wine business from flourishing. "We think residents would be furious to know all that's gone on, particularly the actions of Mike Watts in utilizing the police department to harass us," Schade said. "It's deplorable of a public servant ... of a councilman." Schade's appearance in front of the Waukee City Council Monday night was just another step in a miles-long race to get his dream business of making and selling wine off the ground. The argument between the city of Waukee and the Schade Creek Vineyard & Winery dates back to 2007 when Schade first approached city officials about starting a vineyard on the 13 acres at the end of University …

Today's Daily Dose includes a little bit of everything - broken bones, bad moms, a big council meeting and some other stuff, too.
If you're a regular at Waukee Patch then you might remember the call I received from the school nurse last week. My daughter, a kindergartner, had taken a spill on the sidewalk leaving her scraped up and bruised and looking a little like a prize fighter. It was the first call I'd ever received from the school nurse. I should have knocked on wood. On Friday, just four days after the sidewalk incident, I got a second call. My daughter had fallen from the monkey bars. She hurt her wrist and needed to be seen by a doctor. Turns out it was fractured and she'll be wearing a cast for the next four weeks. Lesson learned. I will never brag about not hearing from the school nurse again. I may not win any "mother-of-the-year" awards but one New …

Im in my mid 50's Joe. Not that old, and as I stated, I built a Business myself. This has nothing to do with progress. Waukee has grown faster than any City in Iowa. That does'nt happen with people against progress in the City. And here is one person trying to not follow the rules when it comes to building his business. I had to do the same just as any other business would. The City is in the …   more ›
