Santa Arrives at Waukee's Winterfest to Celebrate the Holidays

Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, right down Sixth Street and Ashworth Road, for Waukee Winterfest.

Over 500 people gathered in Waukee's Downtown Triangle that was full of lights, Christmas music and holiday cheer Friday night. Winterfest began with people lining up to see Santa Claus in the gazebo. While everyone waited, an ice sculptor was sculpting four different ice blocks and Santa’s elves were going around talking to children and handing candy out. Brandie Smith of Waukee brought her family to Winterfest. “We had a wonderful time,” Smith said. “It just brings out the Christmas spirit. We do this every year and every year it gets better.” After seeing Santa, the children received a brown bag from one of the elves with a surprise in it and moved to a line waiting for a tractor ride. The tractor ride drove everyone to the Walnut …

Parents Talk: Santa Claus

When do you fess up and start telling the truth about Santa Claus?

We're not even into December yet and I'm already wondering how much longer I can talk about the existence of Santa Claus. If your kids are young enough to still believe, then you understand how easy it is to use him as the reason why they should be on their best behavior. "Don't hit your sister, Santa is watching," "If you don't go to sleep, Santa won't come," and, "If you're naughty, you won't get anything for Christmas." It's not like I'm the first parent to tell their kids about St. Nick. At our house, we perpetuate the story even further with an Elf on the Shelf. "Max" (our Elf) usually arrives the day after Thanksgiving to keep tabs on the kids and report back to Santa. I hate to admit it, but it works like a charm. Yes, my kids know …

And no, there is nothing wrong with letting your kids believe in Santa, the tooth fairy, etc. It's the commercialization & greediness that takes away from holidays & causes people to want want want and miss the true meaning.   more ›

Waukee Weighs In: 'What Do You Want for Christmas?'

Everybody wants a little something for Christmas. We asked city leaders, school officials, business owners and residents what they asked Santa for this year.

Christmas is a time for giving but it's also nice to receive a little something too. We asked some of Waukee's finest - city leaders, school administrators, teachers, business owners and residents - what they asked Santa Claus for this year. Read about what they asked for this year: Chad Vollmecke, Waukee wrestling coach and teacher at Waukee High School "I asked Santa to bring me a day or two to sleep until I wake up on my own and then a clear schedule and silent cell phone so I can focus on my family. Dave Wilkerson, Waukee Schools superintendent "I really haven't asked for anything but since the St. Louis Cardinals delivered #11 in 2011, #12 in 2012 would sure be nice." Jerry Ripperger, Waukee School Board president "That all may have …
