The Spectacular Geminid Meteor Shower 2012 Peak: When and Where to Watch

The most reliable meteor shower of the year, the Geminids, is on its way -- with no moon to obscure the show.

The Geminid meteor shower 2012, the final major meteor shower of every year and likely to be the best, peaks overnight Dec. 13 and Dec. 14, and you may be able to see a great show on either side of those dates. If you liked the Perseids meteor shower 2012 in August, you should love this show. NASA reports that the Geminids are a relatively young meteor shower, with the first reports occuring in the 1830s citing rates of about 20 per hour. Over the decades the rates have increased, regularly spawning between 80 and 120 per hour at its peak on a clear evening. How spectacular is it? Just take a look at this video of the Geminid meteor shower. You can also look at some spectacular photos of the Geminids. Earthsky.org reports the Geminids peak…

Waukee Leadership Institute Pledges to Build Amphitheater in Centennial Park

Representatives from the Waukee Leadership Institute proposed an amphitheater in Waukee's Centennial Park at a meeting of the Waukee City Council Monday night.

Members of the Waukee Leadership Insitute announced plans to build an amphitheater at the Waukee City Council meeting Monday night. The project, a proposed entertainment venue in Centennial Park, is the Institutes's class project and could cost approximately $150,000 to build. Rick Peterson, a representative of the Waukee Leadership Institute, told council members Monday night that the group hopes to begin fund-raising by the first of next year. "What we'd like to do is provide the community a gathering place and a venue to attract entertainment to this area," he said. "We would be putting this all through fund-raising and grant requests with limited resources from the City Council." Peterson said the bulk of the funding will come from …

When is the Spectacular Leonids Meteor Shower 2012 Peak: Where and When to Watch

One of the more spectacular meteor showers is on its way.

With most of the year's meteor showers behind us, the Leonid meteor shower is on its way. The famous Leonids are expected to peak on Nov. 17 in the pre-dawn hours. These meteors are fast (about 40 miles per second) and can leave trails of smoke, according to Astronomy.com. They will appear to radiate from the constellation Leo the Lion. "Many Leonids are also bright. Usually, the meteors are white or bluish-white, but in recent years some observers reported yellow-pink and copper-colored ones," according to the website.  One of the 10 cool things to know about the Leonids, from Space.com: "Leonids are spawned by the comet Tempel-Tuttle. Every 33 years, it rounds the Sun and then goes back to the outer solar system. On each passage across …

Waukee Weather Forecast for Orionids Meteor Shower Tonight

Skies look to be clear for Saturday’s show in the sky.

Skies should be clear and temperatures cool for watching a meteor shower in the skies over Waukee tonight. The Orionids meteor shower began Monday and peaks overnight tonight and into Sunday morning. The show is put on compliments of Halley’s comet: As Earth passes through it’s debris, a show of shooting stars is visible, provided the weather cooperates. The moon is doing its part this year, setting at about midnight, which will keep the sky darkened enough that -- barring cloud cover --  up to 15 meteors will streak across the sky per hour. Meteor showers get their names from the constellations in the sky where they can be spotted. And what's easier to spot than Orion the Hunter? The stars tend to shoot from Orion's club, pierce Tauraus …

PHOTOS: It's Fall in Centennial Park

It's probably the most beautiful time of the year in Waukee. Check out these pictures from a stroll in Centennial Park last week.

I have to admit, fall is my absolute favorite time of the year. It's for that reason that I will probably always live in Iowa. I couldn't bear missing the season with the cool weather, Halloween and, of course, the changing of the leaves. On a recent stop at Centennial Park, I took a few photos of the leaves near the covered bridge. I really like all the different colors - the still greens, the orange, the reds, the bright yellows. It's perfect. Do you have some fall photos of your own? Share with us - click "Upload photos and videos" to add them to the gallery.

Perseids Meteor Shower 2012: Peak Time and Place to Watch in Waukee

The meteor shower will be at its best Saturday and Sunday. Where should you watch the Perseids Meteor Shower in Waukee?

The Perseids Meteor Shower 2012 can work for you as a cheap date night, especially since it peaks in Waukee on Saturday night and into Sunday morning. If the clouds cooperate (that means if they stay away), you can see the annual meteor shower any night this week. A great little spot to see the shower is in Centennial Park near the bridges and away from street lights. Space.com tells us these objects are tiny bits of rock and debris from an old comet, which is named Swift-Tuttle after the astronomers who discovered it in 1862. The shower splashes through the sky every year in early August when Earth passes through the comet Swift-Tuttle's orbit and sweeps up some of this debris. We see shooting stars -- rapid streaks of light -- as the …

Eagle Scout Beautifies New Centennial Park Signage

Tanner Peard, an Eagle Scout from Waukee, is hosting a fundraiser Aug. 4 to fund a landscaping project around the newly-installed signage at Centennial Park.

Next time you're stopped at the intersection of University Avenue and Warrior Lane, look to the northeast corner of Centennial Park and send a little shout out Tanner Peard. Peard, 17, along with a bevy of volunteers, landscaped around the newly-installed signage for Waukee's Centennial Park last Saturday.  The project was the final step in Peard's quest to become a full-fledged Eagle Scout. He's been a scout for six years in Waukee and said he chose the project with residents of the city in mind. "I was trying to find something that would help the city, too," he said. "I wanted to do something that everyone could enjoy." Peard, a senior at Waukee High School, approached Parks & Recreation director Matt Jermier looking for ideas when the …
