Officials had to turn away spectators when more people than expected showed up to hear Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.
GOP vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan criticized the president's jobs record and avoided the recent controversy set off by his remarks at the Republican National Convention last week, before a sold out crowd at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids on Tuesday, During his nearly 30 minute speech at the same venue - Johnson Hall - where President Barack Obama spoke in July, Ryan railed against Obama and the "failure" of his administration. "Jimmy Carter was fired in 1980 and Ronald Reagan was fired," he said. "And if you look at his jobs record, Obama was even worse than Jimmy Carter." He said that GOP nominee and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney's business experience well qualifies him to restore the economy. Romney …

In Wednesday's speech in Cedar Rapids, President Obama outlined a plan to revive the U.S. economy and manufacturing. Now, we ask you: Do you think it will work?
In Wednesday's visit to Iowa, U.S. President Barack Obama said that he was introducing multiple new policies to revitalize the American economy. The only thing was, he didn't mention a single one of them in his 30-minute speech at Conveyor Engineering and Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids. The details of his plans came to me, and presumably thousands of other journalists, in a White House email. Vote whether Obama's list of initiatives will work in our Patch Poll below, and click here for a photo gallery of his trip to Cedar Rapids on Wednesday. They are fairly easy to understand, but for a layperson like me, impossible to determine whether or not they will have their intended effect. So, I'll lay them out for you. So, now that you've read …

A gallery of President Barack Obama's visit to Cedar Rapids.
President Barack Obama spoke today on the shop floor of a conveyor belt plant in Cedar Rapids. It was his first chance to fight back in Iowa since being bashed for months by GOP presidential hopefuls campaigning for the Iowa Caucus. Iowa will be a critical state for both Democrats and Republicans in the 2012 election. The speech was the president's first stop on a five-state tour following the State of the Union address on Tuesday night. President Obama spoke for about 30 minutes. Roughly 400 people attended. Prior to his arrival, the crowd sat still and silent, sandwiched between two fences, separating them from the media in the back and the presidential area in the front. Were you there? Do you have any photos from the Obama event? Add …
In a speech following Obama's State of the Union address, the president spoke to a crowd of over 400 people at Conveyor Engineering and Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids.
President Barack Obama promised two new initiatives today, encouraging investing in the U.S. and halting outsourcing. Companies are currently rewarded for outsourcing via tax breaks, the president said. "We need to make it easier for American businesses to do business in America and we need to make it easier to attain the goal I set a goal of doubling U.S. exports in five years," Obama told a crowd a manufacturing plant in Cedar Rapids today. The 30-minute speech to about 400 people on the work floor of Conveyor Engineering and Manufacturing was Obama's first chance to fight back in Iowa. He's been bombarded with attacks for months as Republican presidential candidates toured the state while campaigning for the Iowa Caucus. Take a look at…

U.S. President Barack Obama seems to have a love affair with the Hawkeye state, but is the love mutual or is it a one-way street?
It is no secret that U.S. President Barack Obama isn't as popular as when he was sweeping the nation in 2008, campaigning on hope and change. Even though his approval ratings have dropped across the country, he still seems to have a special relationship with the Hawkeye state. Let us know how you feel about President Obama's visit to Iowa on Wednesday in our Patch Poll and join in the conversation in the comment section. After winning the Iowa Caucus in 2008, former Illinois senator made Iowa City the first stop upon passing his historic health care legislation. On Wednesday, Cedar Rapids will be his first stop in a five-state, State of the Union tour. It's clear Obama has high hopes for Iowa's voters. But is this love affair a one-way …

Rick Santorum rallied with supporters at TrueNorth Learning Center in Cedar Rapids.
Up and coming GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum continued to take shots at rival Ron Paul during a campaign stop in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday night. Santorum equated Paul’s foreign policy plans to fringe Democrat Dennis Kucinich, called some of the Texas Congressman’s policies “craziness,” and suggested some of the changes Paul proposes to make are dictatorial. “He is out in the Dennis Kucinich wing of the Democratic party. He may even be left of Dennis Kucinich,” Santorum said of the libertarian Paul. “What people don’t like about Ron Paul is this craziness about cutting military in half, pulling our troops in from all over the world. (As president), he can do that." “Let’s get serious about what message Iowa is going to send to the …

By Hannah Hess IowaPolitics.com CEDAR RAPIDS -- U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minnesota, put pressure on the “backbone” of the Republican Party today, telling conservatives here not to settle for a moderate candidate. The 2012 presidential race “could be the last election that we elect a president that will be leading this nation when we are the leading economic producer of the world, and the leading military superpower of the world,” Bachmann said. “In any subsequent election, we could find ourselves in ‘also-ran’ status.” Bachmann has recently found herself becoming an “also-ran” second-tier candidate. On Saturday, she placed last among eight candidates in the Florida straw poll, with just 1.5 percent of the 2,657 votes cast. She …
