1) Taylor Hale's Recovery On Sept. 9, Prairieview School freshman Taylor Hale, 14, was thrown off a moving car while visiting a friend's house in Clive. Hale suffered a severe head injury and spent 42 days at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines. During that time, friends and family rallied around the Waukee teenager, raising money through T-shirt sales, can collection and private donations to help offset the cost of the family's medical bills. Taylor was released from the hospital on Oct. 20 to continue her recovery at home. 2) Happy Time Preschool & Daycare and Point of Grace Church On Aug. 19, staff members of the Happy Time Preschool & Daycare at the Point of Grace Church in Waukee were told they were being let go and that in order …

Casey Harvey's name was drawn out of a hat today, breaking the tie between him and challenger Chris Colter in the Nov. 8 election for Waukee City Council.
A navy United States Air Force hat held the answer to a Waukee City Council election on Tuesday morning. That answer was incumbent Casey Harvey, who beat challenger Chris Colter with a little luck. The two council candidates tied during the Nov. 8 city election, each receiving 502 votes. Gene Krumm, Dallas County elections commissioner, said the Waukee election received five absentee ballots, but all had to be tossed because they were defective, either defective because they were either not signed or not sealed when mailed. Iowa code says a board of supervisors may decide ties by putting candidates' names on pieces of paper and drawing a winner. In a Waukee city election campaign marked by a mayoral candidate bowing out after less than a month in the race and divisive ads for city council, tonight came another twist: a tie for a council seat Bill Peard retained his seat as mayor of Waukee with 667 votes, while newcomer Shelly Hughes snagged one of two spots on the Waukee City Council with 515 votes. But, incumbent councilman Casey Harvey and challenger Chris Colter tied the election at 502 votes each for the second council seat. Colter said he could hardly believe it. "Isn't that crazy?" More than halfway through the day, voter turnout was looking bleak. By 5 p.m., less than 500 people had cast their votes for mayor and city council candidates.
By all early indications, the number of Waukee residents turning out to vote in today's city election was as bleak as the weather. At 5 p.m., an informal survey of all four voting precincts in Waukee found that less than 500 people had turned out to cast their vote in the mayoral and city council elections. "Traffic has been pretty light," said Muriel Nizzi, a volunteer at St. Boniface Catholic Church, serving the largest precinct in Waukee. At 4 p.m. only 152 people had voted at St. Boniface (precinct 4), followed by Immanuel Lutheran Church (precinct 1) with 140, Westview Church (precinct 3) with 124 and Waukee School Administration Building (precinct 2) with 56. Waukee City Councilman Casey Harvey says he wants to continue to do right by the residents of Waukee in terms of city spending.
On Nov. 8, Waukee voters will decide who should serve on the Waukee City Council and as mayor of Waukee. There are two seats up for grabs in the election. Concerns over high property taxes took center stage at a debate between candidates for mayor and city council Tuesday night.
It was a battle between the newcomers and experienced leaders Tuesday night at the Waukee Mayor and City Council Candidate Forum held at the Waukee City Council Chambers. Five candidates, all vying for seats in Waukee city government, debated Waukee’s dominant issues – everything from property taxes to progress on the Alice’s Road corridor project and other topics. The biggest surprise of the night was Daniel Pettit, a relative newcomer who’s challenging incumbent Bill Peard for the office of Waukee mayor. Three candidates for two available seats on the Waukee City Council and two candidates for mayor, including incumbent Bill Peard, will square off tonight in a public forum at the Waukee City Hall Chambers.
It's still a month away but the five candidates running for seats on the Waukee City Council are already warming up for the Nov. 8 election. There are two spots up for grabs on the Waukee City Council this fall. Council member Casey Harvey's term ends Dec. 31, as does council member Darlene Stanton's. Stanton has resigned her seat effective Oct. 18 because she is moving out of state.
