Cost for the class is $12 at door, $10 in advance or $9 each for groups of 5 or more. To make a reservation, call Tammy at (515) 987-0899 ext. 230 For a schedule of events and activities at the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines in Waukee, check out their calendar. Rosh Hashanah, which literally means “head of the year,” signals the beginning of the High Holy Days. Yom Kippur, or Day of Atonement, marks the end, and …

It's the Longest Day of the Year. Happy Summer Solstice!

It's the first official day of summer and the longest day of the year, Waukee. It's also pretty darn hot. What are you doing today to make the most of the first day of summer?

Today is the first day of summer, also known as the summer solstice. It's the longest day of the year (and the shortest night). The actual moment of the solstice will occur at about 7:09 p.m. this evening, while the sun sits directly above the Pacific Ocean to the west of Hawaii. As you may remember from your grade school science lessons, the seasons and the changing lengths of the day and night throughout the year are a result of the Earth's axial tilt. Try to visualize the Earth's orbit around the sun as an elliptical path on an imaginary plane in space. As the Earth rests in that plane, its north and south poles—the ends of its axis—do not point straight "up" and "down." The axis is instead about 23.4 degrees off the "vertical." As a …

Waukee Girls Seek State Berth in Bowling; Boys Aim to Break Last Year's Losing Streak

The girls' bowling team will try to build on last year's winning record in its fifth season as a varsity sanctioned team. The boys will look to improve on a 0-10 campaign last season.

Girls' Bowling Team Aims for State Berth In the five years that bowling has been a sanctioned varsity sports, the Waukee Warriors have sent one bowler to state. This year the Warriors hope to improve upon that, as well as better last year's 8-3 record by the Waukee girls' bowling team. Head coach Chris Roberts has been at the helm since the program was sanctioned as a varsity sport five years ago. He says this team should improve on the record from a year ago. "I don't see us dropping off from where we were last year," Roberts said. "If anything, I see us being better than what we were last year." One reason why Roberts is so confident with this year's team is Shelby Klumpers. Klumpers has a bowling lineage. Her dad bowled in college and …

Waukee Wrestlers Seek First Winning Record Since Joining Large Schools

The wrestlers and coach Chad Vollmecke want to have multiple competitors in the state tournament and compete in regionals for the first time.

Eighth-year head coach Chad Vollmecke took 24 kids to Troy, Mo., this summer for the Purler Takedown Machine Camp. That's a microcosm of the commitment and improvement he says is taking place right now with Waukee's wrestling program. The Warriors' lone state qualifier from last year, Collin Mundus, has graduated and is wrestling at Grand View University. Still, Vollmecke says this year's team has realistic goals to improve from last year's team that finished 10-11 in dual meets. Based upon his track record as head coach, it seems like a good possibillity. When Vollmecke took over in 2004, his team went 3-18 in dual meets. In the following years, his team's won three, six, seven, nine, nine and then last year 10 wins, to go along with 11 …
