Parents ruin sports..

Alan I agree. Parents coach to get their kids and kids friends a leg up. Kids are choosen too basedRead More on parents and kids being friends. Take AAU and All-Stars and positions in each sport. Parents coach because they want their kid in prime positions, kids are friends with certain kids or because a family does not like someone but the kid has talent not playing. You need "out of area" coaches to come and determine if a kid is "that good" to be at the next level not "locals" whom coach because that is the only way the kid will get playing time.

sportsnut: Seems like a perfect opportunity for you to get involved in coaching... If nothingRead More else, becoming a coach will give you a voice in the league to lobby for equal playing time for all kids, and rotation of positions--particularly at the lower levels.

Comment from reader: Jim Zabel was community minded.I was a classmate of his daughter,Jane, and weRead More had fun attending the relays, parades, basketball games, dance class, sewing class, raising tomatoes, riding in convertibles and singing along with the radio. ~Carol Pugsley

My brother and I listened to Zabel announcing Hawkeye football games while working at our dad'sRead More hatchery in Osage back in the mid-to-late 1950's. That was a great era for the Hawks, and the broadcasts certainly made obnoxious work easier to tolerate.
