Death Penalty for Child Abductors, Pedophiles? Iowa Patch Poll

High-profile kidnappings like those involving Evansdale cousins Elizabeth Collins and Lyric Cook-Morrissey – and now Kathlynn Shepard – inevitably lead to talk of restoring the death penalty in Iowa.

Emotion-gripped cases like the abduction, sexual assault or murder of a child often provide a platform for capital punishment advocates to argue for reinstatement of capital punishment, abolished in Iowa in 1965. After the Evansdale cousins’ bodies were discovered, a pro-death penalty effort led by state Sen. Kent Sorenson, R-Milo, failed to gather much steam in the just-adjourned Iowa General Assembly, but the question lingers: Is the death penalty an effective deterrent? Capital punishment proponent Noreen Gosch, whose son was kidnapped three decades ago, argues that Iowa has “a kidnapping problem” and the perpetrators of those crimes would be less likely to abduct children in Iowa if they thought they would be executed. Opponents say …

Hang those S.O.B's! one trial and if convicted its over, no more cost to the tax payer and a length of rope can be used multiple times. These people generally pray upon young, naïve people. if the victims do survive they are the ones that will suffer a life time of wondering why nobody did anything to protect them. But if the perpetrator is dead that is one less of the worst kind of criminal to …   more ›

Movie information aggregated from MovieFone.com Epic (also in 3D) "Epic isn't quite destined for the “Again, again!” re-watchability of some of the Pixar classics, but for a satisfying explosion of color on a lazy summer day, it does the trick." Stephan Lee, Entertainment Weekly. "A reasonably entertaining, adeptly crafted kidpic whose biggest crime is its near pathological reliance on overfamiliar tropes and trappings." Andrew Barker, Variety. Do you plan on seeing this movie? Leave a review of the film with a comment below after you do. - - - - - Fast & Furious 6 "Everyone involved at last seems to understand that the mode here is comic. On National Missing Children’s Day, Irony is Cruel: Editor’s Notebook

Iowa’s innocence has been abducted again.

I am not a parent. But I doubt I’ll ever read another statement like the one issued by the parents of Kathlynn Shepard without tearing up and feeling like someone karate-kicked me square in the heart: "We would like to thank everybody who took the time from their busy lives to help search for Kathlynn. To see so much love in our community and the surrounding areas is amazing. Thank you for all of your prayers and we hope to have Kathlynn home soon. "We know that members of the public and media want to talk to us. Please understand, the idea of doing an interview is too overwhelming right now. Until Kathlynn is found, we’ll remain focused on our family. …” Stories like these are always tough. But what changed and awoke the latent mother …

Weird Iowa: School for Rent on Craigslist, Calling John Belushi, Car Careens Off Overpass

Plus, the body of a man last seen on a backhoe in Ames is found, Urbandale residents put out a fire for fun, and a West Des Moines woman welcomes new neighbors by waving a knife and complaining that the grass needs mowed.

With many schools wrapping up classes this week, seniors were feeling frisky. The seniors at Linn-Mar High School in Marion supposedly posted on Craigslist that the high school is for rent.   Where are Bluto and Otter when you need them? Frat and sorority houses sometimes seem a little weird, but students say it's not "Animal House" anymore, rather a positive community of brotherhoods or sisterhoods that give back to society. University of Iowa students told Iowa City's council they fear a housing rule change could end their Greek lifestyle. As a show of good faith, a city council member said he didn't see John Belushi in the house. Why are Urbandale residents putting out fires? It was part of the finale of the Urbandale Citizen Fire …

Where's the Cheapest Gas in Waukee?

You can use this gas price widget to always find the lowest price of the moment.

Click here for a mobile view of the gas price map. Nationwide, gas prices were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump in Iowa or elsewhere this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. Waukee gas stations: Casey's General Store Hy-Vee Gas Kum and Go In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to produce as much …

All gas stations in Waukee raise or lower their prices within minutes of each other. Unless you happen to drive by two stations with different prices, it's futile wasting time and gas looking for the lowest price.   more ›

Iowa Hawkeye Fans Mourn Death of Broadcasting Great Jim Zabel

Zabel, known for his catchphrase "I love it! I love it! I love it!" (and what he loved was Hawkeye sports) died on Thursday at his Arizona home.

Hawkeyenation is in mourning today for one of its broadcasting legends, who has passed on to that great Kinnick Stadium in the sky. Jim Zabel, 91, whose voice was associated with many of the great moments in the modern era of University of Iowa Hawkeye sports, died on Thursday at his home in Scottsdale, Ariz.  Jim Zabel, Iowa broadcasting legend, dies at 91 (Press-Citizen via Des Moines Register) A moment of silence, please, for a voice that was rarely still: Jim Zabel, the broadcasting legend whose hyperbolic descriptions of University of Iowa sports teams entertained radio listeners for more than half a century, died Thursday at his Scottsdale, Ariz., home. He was 91. His wife, Jill, confirmed the news. “He loved everybody, and his world…

My brother and I listened to Zabel announcing Hawkeye football games while working at our dad's hatchery in Osage back in the mid-to-late 1950's. That was a great era for the Hawks, and the broadcasts certainly made obnoxious work easier to tolerate.   more ›
