Green Thumbs Needed Today to Plant Community Garden for Waukee Food Pantry

The Waukee Community Garden needs volunteers Monday, June 3, to plant produce.

The weather is finally warm and dry enough for volunteers to help plant the Fruitful Vine Garden today at Westview Church, the harvest of which will provide fresh produce to patrons of the Waukee Area Christian Food Pantry.

Melissa Stimple, director of Waukee Area Christian Services, said in an email on Saturday that organizers plan to act fast and get as many people as possible out to the garden today, June 3.

"The rain should hold off the next couple days allowing the garden to dry up enough for us to get everything planted in one day," she wrote. "So far only about one-quarter of the garden is planted … so much more to go in order to provide an abundant harvest for families in need through the food pantry."

Stimple said last year the garden produced more than 1,500 pounds of produce.

"In a nutshell, the garden needs you, your friends and family (whoever you can convince to join you) to come (today)," Stimple wrote.

The garden will be open from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 7 p.m. No experience is necessary and all ages are welcome.
