Waukee's McCay Named Co-Rookie of the Year at Luther College

The outfielder, from Waukee, batted .404 and helped lead the Luther College softball team to a fifth-place finish at nationals.

Miranda McCay, a 2012 graduate of Waukee High School, was presented the Co-Rookie of the Year Award at the Luther College annual post-season banquet held Sunday, July 28. McCay shared the honor with freshman Carli Radil (Chanhassen, Minn./Minnetonka). 

McCay, a freshman outfielder who started 34 of 39 games, batted .404 with 27 RBI en route to being named all-Iowa Conference. She led the team with 10 doubles and was also credited with two home runs and a triple. Defensively, she had 32 putouts, four assists and one error for a fielding percentage of .973. She helped lead Luther to a fourth consecutive appearance to the NCAA III National Softball Finals and a fifth-place finish in the nation.

Under the directions of head coach Renae Hartl, the Norse tallied an overall record of 33-11 and finished the 2013 campaign ranked sixth in the nation by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III Top-25 poll.

McCay is the daughter of Keith and Brenda McCay of Waukee.

Luther College is a four-year liberal arts college affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America and is located in Decorah, Iowa. The Norse compete in 10 men's and nine women's intercollegiate sports.
