Waukee High School Women's Golf Team Looking to Defend State Title

Flashback to May 2010 and the Waukee High School women’s golf team comes within one stroke to Ames High School of winning the Iowa Girls Athletic Union State 4A (large schools) Championship.

One year later the 2011 team finished in third place in the state tournament. From that point on they have pretty much dominated every opponent, winning last year’s state championship with a big comeback on day two.

Waukee’s veteran women’s golf coach Marty Sullivan had this to say about the Warriors: “The team is looking really good right now. With Payton Minear’s (last year’s #1 player) return from elbow surgery we are really solid up and down the lineup. We’re undefeated and currently ranked  No. 1 in the state. Jasmine Wyzgowski and Kelsy Shay have been very solid performers and freshman Paige Seiser has been a very nice player, scoring in every event. Brittany Best has continued her good play and Caitie Oder played her way on the squad late in the season and has become a huge role player for us.”

Cedar Falls High School and Pleasant Valley High School look to be Waukee’s main obstacles in keeping Waukee from winning their second championship on as many years.

The 5A (new class for large schools) state championship is today and tomorrow with a shotgun start slated for 10 a.m. today and 9 a.m. Wednesday at Lake Panorama National Golf Course in Panora.
