‘Wow’ Houses on Steroids: Waukee Builder Has Showcase Entry at 2013 Expo

Bent Creek Estates is again hosting the showcase of some of the newest and best that Des Moines area home builders have to offer.

Written by Beth Dalbey and Deb Belt

A Waukee company has a model home on display at the Des Moines Home Builders Association’s showcase of homes, this year at Bent Creek Estates in Urbandale.

Genesis Homes of Iowa, based in Waukee, has a house on the tour that boasts about 3,800 square feet on two levels. Features include marble inlay, Asian walnut floors, a high-end master suite, hidden pantry, wet bar and game area, and a showcase stairway.

The 10-day expo starts this weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and continues July 18-21 and July 25-28. It’s the 38th year for the tour of homes sponsored by the Johnston-based Des Moines Home Builder’s Association. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased on site.

Builders from around the metro have designed and constructed showcase homes, including two that list for $1 million or more – both built by Urbandale companies.

Here's what Genesis owner Dan Sparks has to say about his company's showcase offering:

Q. What are the most striking features of the house?

A. The most striking feature of the home is the use of traditional finishes in a contemporary floor plan. It is what we call “transitional.”

Q. How many bedrooms, baths, square footage, etc?

A.  One bedroom and 1½ bath on the main floor, 2105 square feet on the main floor; three bedrooms and two baths in the basement, 1795 square feet basement finish. For a total of 3,900 square feet finished with a 1,200 square foot garage

Q. What will be the biggest wow for people on the tour when they see the house?

A. The two most popular features have been the 15-foot ceilings in the great room with windows open from the front of the home to the rear of the home. Second would be the 230 square foot master bedroom closet with a washer and dryer.

Q. What are your predictions for the housing market in central Iowa this year?

A. The housing market in the Des Moines metro area has been building at a conservative rate for the last couple of years. My prediction for growth in the housing market remains positive due to the fact that the cost to build remains affordable and current home values are appreciating back to the value of years ago. These two factors allow people to sell their current homes at a good market value and move into new construction at an affordable cost.
