The Consequences of Obamacare

Senate Republican Leader Jerry Behn talks about the consequences of the Supreme Court's ruling on Affordable Health Care.

Submitted by Senate Republican Leader Jerry Behn

We learn from an early age that actions (and inactions) have consequences.

Thursday’s Supreme Court decision allows the largest tax increase in American history to go into effect, thus guaranteeing more uncertainty and unpredictability for Iowa small businesses and employers.

Unfortunately, Obamacare is just the latest in a series of actions (by Congress and the President) – or inactions (by the current Iowa Senate Majority) – that have not given employers and small businesses that confidence and certainty they badly need to help grow Iowa’s economy.

We have seen the failure of the current majority in the Iowa Senate fail to act on aggressive, authentic and permanent property tax relief. This same current majority also failed to move on a wide-ranging government regulation reform and also came up far short in revamping our education system to give our children the tools they need to compete in this increasingly global and mobile economy.

Whether it is destructive health care laws that mean a future of higher costs, higher taxes and increasing debt passed in Washington or whether it is inaction by Iowa Senate Democrats on critical job creating policy improvements – it is just the latest reminder that elections do have consequences.

Jerry Behn is either misinformed or he's lying and knows better. According to PolitiFact, the Affordable Care Act does not result in the biggest tax increase in history. Several tax increases have been larger, including at least one to pay for World War II. As the minority leader of the Iowa Senate, it's time for Behn to start acting like a statesman instead of a party hack repeating false talking points.

More repubs lies about the affordable health care act. The repubs main tactic is lying, and lie some more hoping that these lies will be seen as the truth. If you have real disagreements with the act, the president, or congress use real reasons. Spurious reasons show the repubs are bereft of any real ideas, their only agenda to go against the President. How unutterably sad.

Could one of the reasons for the population loss in rural Iowa be the lack of decent paying jobs?Read More There are large portions of rural Iowa where there are minimum wage jobs without benefits. Wal-Mart has replaced many small businesses in rural counties. Many of their workers need welfare to survive. The welfare programs that Wal-Mart workers rely on include Medicaid, subsidized housing and food assistance. Meanwhile Wal-Mart and other corporations are setting records for corporate profits. A May 2013 report “The Low-Wage Drag on Our Economy: Wal-Mart’s Low Wages and Their Effect on Taxpayers and Economic Growth” shows how their business model exerts downward pressure on wages. Should we continue to support a created taxpayer-funded social welfare program by corporations? Raising the minimum wage could help alleviate those programs.

Julia Ziesman, I boycott Walmart for the reasons you listed. American taxpayers subsidize Walmart'sRead More low wages and poor benefits with $2.1 billion a year. Collectively, Sam Walton's heirs contributed a whole $6,000 to charity. I looked up the three class-action lawsuits against Walmart that I knew about and found 71. Many lawsuits against Walmart are to try to make courts enforce their many rulings against Walmart. I was really upset when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to allow Walmart women workers' lawsuit against Walmart to proceed as a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit that shocked me the most was that of a 33-year-old handicapped woman in a wheelchair who wouldn't believe that Walmart had shaved her time card hours in order to pay her less than the pitiful hourly wage she should have earned. Her lawyers had to produce documents to prove to her that Walmart was really that unethical.
