Want a Lush Lawn this Spring

Metro Waste Authority promotes safe, smart recycling and disposal options.

Turf Gold Compost Lawn Application is the Answer

Whether you desire a good-looking lawn or are concerned with the environmental
impact and safety aspects of fertilizer, applying compost to your yard is the answer.

Compost Benefits

  • Increase your soil's ability to absorb water
  • Improve your soil quality by feeding it nutrients, creating a habitat for grass and plants to thrive
  • Requires less watering (reducing need for costly irrigation system)
  • Decreases reliance on fertilizer; less fertilizer means fewer harmful chemicals running off into your storm sewer and our waterways

Fertilizer Facts

  • Requires multiple applications in one season
  • Temporary solution, doesn’t add long-term nutrients to soil (it’s a band-aid)
  • Pollutes stormwater (more water treatment = increase  in water cost)
  • Harmful for children and pets

More Compost Use = Need for More Yard Waste Recycling
You may wonder why Metro Waste Authority cares about lawn
care. We have good reasons:

  • Keep valuable materials out of the landfill. Our vision is "No Wasted
Resources."  We look for ways to keep valuable (and recyclable) materials out of the landfill. Yard waste, banned from Iowa landfills in the early 90s, is recycled into compost – a valuable product.
  • Prevent pollution. Fertilizers pollute our stormwater system and contribute to poor soil quality. The more you pollute your waterways, the more you pay for water to be treated.
  • Reduce the use of hazardous waste and protect children. Household hazardous materials are the leading cause of poisonings in children. When you are not using fertilizers and other products, be sure to store them safely and educate your children about the danger.
