Reading With Children

Why should you read with your kids? Devon Murphy-Petersen offers simple tips to improve your child's reading skills.

Reading with your child is, in my opinion, the very best gift any parent can give to their kids. Luckily, it is also fun and rewarding as you watch your child progress and grow in knowledge and understanding.

Here are a few simple tips to help improve your child's reading skills:

1. Get a library card. They’re free!  As an Iowa resident, you can get a library card at nearly any public library in the state.

2. Read with your kids. Spend a minimum of 20 minutes each day reading with your kids.  Whether you’re reading aloud, or listening to your child read aloud, it’s a great learning and bonding time.

3. Read yourself. Magazines, newspapers, books, recipes – let your child see that you are reading too.

4. Encourage your children to talk about what they’re reading, and talk about what you’re reading yourself.  Talking about books is great dinner-table conversation.

5. Use your library, and encourage your kids to pick out books. In addition to books, most libraries offer fun age-appropriate story times.

6.  It is never too early or too late to start. Your child is born loving the sound of your voice, so read to your newborn.  If you have not made reading a habit, it is never too late – start by sharing reading time with your child today!
