The Case for Mitt Romney: From Opening Remarks to the Closing Argument

My time with Mitt Romney, and the opening remarks and closing argument as to why he should be President.

I first met on Governor Mitt Romney in the fall of 2004. I was working on the Bush/Cheney re-elect, and Romney was headlining a fundraiser for the Iowa Republican Party. I remember that evening being impressed with his ease and comfort level with the crowd. Also being impressed with his optimism, and warm vision he shared for America. In early 2005 I was working for Congressman King as a district representative in Creston. I had a number of encounters with Governor Romney as he traveled to Iowa to help legislative candidates across our state. In 2006, I left my position with Congress to go to work for Mitt Romney.

I began traveling various counties in Iowa to introduce Mitt Romney to local leaders and political activists. Most people had never heard of Mitt Romney. I remember telling people over and over, Mitt Romney is going to be President. These past few days I have recalled some of the conversations with these Iowans, and some of my opening remarks for Mitt Romney seem to be the same as the closing argument for Mitt Romney that has been told these past few days.

  • Mitt Romney was Governor of a state that had a legislature of 85% Democrats. He knows how to work with the opposition party to get things done.
  • Mitt Romney balanced the budget every year he was Governor and erased a $4 billion debt, without raising taxes. In fact he cut taxes 19 times.
  • Mitt Romney made education a priority in Massachusetts, and his state excelled in education.
  • He reformed the healthcare system without having the government takeover healthcare. Instead, having those in the market compete, driving down prices making it more affordable for all.
  • He is a turnaround expert. He successfully turned around many broken and failing businesses, and made them a success. He successfully turned around the 2002 Olympics, after they had been mired in scandal and corruption. And he fixed Massachusetts, when they were in financial ruin.

These were just some of the points made by me about Mitt Romney in my opening remarks as to why he should be President. And they are some of the same points in the closing argument as to why he should be President. Many points have been made in between, but it all boils down to the fact that Mitt Romney is the kind of leader that will work across the aisle. He won’t just be President for the Republican Party; he will be President of all Americans, just as he was Governor of every resident in Massachusetts, not just the Republican ones.

I understand that you may not agree with Mitt Romney on every issue, and I’m not writing this to get into political banter with readers of the Patch. If you know me, you know that I am not the kind of guy that tries to score political points by tearing down others. I am for suggesting ideas to fix our problems, and if one has a better idea, I want to hear it. You may not agree with Mitt on everything, and I am sure you don’t agree with Barack Obama on every issue either. I would suggest that if you want a candidate that you agree with on every issue, you should look in the mirror. What I know is this; Mitt Romney will deliver change, because he has a record of delivering change. He will get us to a balanced budget, and help to create an environment that will help create and build jobs and increase take home pay. He has done these things before, and he will do them again when he is President. When Mitt Romney is President, he will get to work on day one to accomplish this; he won’t spend all of his time blaming his predecessor for the problems we face. He is running to fix those problems, and that is what he will do.

Mitt Romney is certainly the right man for the times we are in. I hope you will join me in casting a vote for him for President.
