White Shutter Leads; Voting Extended in Patch's "Best Photographer" Contest

Our Readers' Choice poll for best Waukee photographer has been extended until Sunday, April 29 at 9 a.m. The winner will be announced on Monday.

Waukee photographers have been uploading their photos, and readers have spoken both with their comments and with their votes.

Last week, though, we had one of those pesky bugs in our system that made it difficult for photographers to upload their photos for the first time -- and to add photos to those already up. The bug, we're happy to report, has been squashed.

Now, with that bit of evil dead, we've decided to let Readers' Choice for best photographer live a couple of days longer than we'd planned, providing the opportunity for photographers to upload their photos and voters to vote for their favorites. (And for photographers who have already uploaded photos, feel free to add more to this story to really show off your work.)

The new deadline for uploads and for voting will be Sunday, April 29 at 9 a.m. The winner will be announced on Monday, April 30.

The rules are the same. Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor, based on poll results and reviews on our Patch Directory. Please vote only once per survey, per Patch.

Participants in the "Best Photographer" contest include:

  • , www.whiteshutterphoto.com
  • , www.yanaglezina.com
  • , www.terrysnyderphotography.photoreflect.com
  • , www.bellakphotography.net
  • Tickled Pink Photography, www.wix.com/shannonldeweerd/tickledpinkphotographyshannon

Vote in the poll at the bottom of the page. Ties will be broken by whichever business has the most positive comments in the section below.

So get to voting, already and remember to tell us why your pick should be named the Best Photographer in Waukee in the comments below.

Yana Glezina has taken pictures of our family, our children and she even did my profile picture and I just love her work. Her photographs hang all over our home and are some of my most prized possessions. She's easy to work with and her work is exceptional. I would recommend to anyone.

I have also seen a lot of Yana's work and it is impeccable. She has a real eye for capturing the perfect moment on film. She is one of the best in Iowa!

Yana has been our go to photographer for many years now. She has taken amazing photos of my children, pictures that have captured their spirit, their essence, what makes them, them. And she does so while putting them completely at ease. In fact, shortly after a photo session with Yana, my son decided he didn't like the photographer used during school picture day, because he wouldn't let him show all of his 'best' faces.

Could one of the reasons for the population loss in rural Iowa be the lack of decent paying jobs?Read More There are large portions of rural Iowa where there are minimum wage jobs without benefits. Wal-Mart has replaced many small businesses in rural counties. Many of their workers need welfare to survive. The welfare programs that Wal-Mart workers rely on include Medicaid, subsidized housing and food assistance. Meanwhile Wal-Mart and other corporations are setting records for corporate profits. A May 2013 report “The Low-Wage Drag on Our Economy: Wal-Mart’s Low Wages and Their Effect on Taxpayers and Economic Growth” shows how their business model exerts downward pressure on wages. Should we continue to support a created taxpayer-funded social welfare program by corporations? Raising the minimum wage could help alleviate those programs.

Julia Ziesman, I boycott Walmart for the reasons you listed. American taxpayers subsidize Walmart'sRead More low wages and poor benefits with $2.1 billion a year. Collectively, Sam Walton's heirs contributed a whole $6,000 to charity. I looked up the three class-action lawsuits against Walmart that I knew about and found 71. Many lawsuits against Walmart are to try to make courts enforce their many rulings against Walmart. I was really upset when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to allow Walmart women workers' lawsuit against Walmart to proceed as a class-action lawsuit. The lawsuit that shocked me the most was that of a 33-year-old handicapped woman in a wheelchair who wouldn't believe that Walmart had shaved her time card hours in order to pay her less than the pitiful hourly wage she should have earned. Her lawyers had to produce documents to prove to her that Walmart was really that unethical.
