Friends, Families Gather for National Night Out

Hundreds of people filled Waukee's Centennial Park Aug. 6 for National Night Out.

A little rain Tuesday night didn't keep Centennial Park empty, as hundreds of Waukee families gathered to enjoy games, music, and free food as part of National Night Out.

The Waukee Fire Department had a truck on display for kids to check out and firefighters helping with activities.

Fire Chief Clint Robinson has been to the National Night Out every year. Tuesday night he was helping with the water fights.

"The kids have fun getting wet when it's hot like this," Robinson said. "This is probably one of the busier years. It's great getting people out and talking to each other."

Michael Brandt, an officer for the Iowa Department of Corrections, was on hand with his K9 dog, Kiko.

"It's a lot of fun for Kiko and I to come here," Brandt said. "He really enjoys the kids and the attention he gets from them."

A free dinner and popsicles were also offered to everyone. Jodi Chambers, a volunteer at the event, was giving out the icy treats.

"We had a great time at the event," Chambers said. "It's great seeing everyone come out and spend the night together."

This event is a nationwide initiative sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch meant to prevent crime and drug use in communities across the United States.

The first National Night Out event was held in 1984 in 400 communities in 23 states. Waukee is one of 15,110 communities that participated. The event lasted from 5 to 9 p.m.
