Did you know it’s National Volunteer Appreciation Week? We’re excited a week is designated to recognize volunteers everywhere. If we had our way it would be a year-round event!
Our volunteers (Bigs) are the heart of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa. They devote their time and energy mentoring a child (a Little), changing lives for the better, forever. We appreciate our Bigs dedication and enthusiasm so much.
The impact our Bigs make is endless. In a study of past participants, Littles reported
- 86% improve in self-confidence
- 64% improve in decision making
- 63% improve in relationships with peers and family members
- 72% improve in academic performance
- 59% improve in school preparedness
We want YOU to be part of this positive influence! You don’t need experience or special training, money or a degree — you just need to be yourself and have fun.
Our mentoring programs offer flexibility. Bigs and Littles can get together in a variety of locations, at different times of day and share in a multitude of activities. You choose what works best for you.
Our core mentoring programs include School-Based, School-Based Plus and Community-Based.
Need some time to think about it? In the meantime, why not volunteer at the Hy-Vee Kids’ Fishing Derby on May 19? The derby is a fun, free event that is open to the public. With an anticipated visitor attendance of more than 30,000 people, it provides children up to the age of 15 the chance to fish and win prizes. We need people to help hand out T-shirts, monitor check-out and check-in of fishing poles and more!
In 2011, Iowa was listed second in the nation for residents who take time to volunteer (source: United Way of Central Iowa). Let’s make it to number one this year! Share your volunteer experiences with friends and family, and encourage them to get involved.
