Waukee Scout Leader Pleads Guilty in Child Porn Case

Jonathan Payne, a former Cub Scout leader for a group that drew from Urbandale, Clive and Waukee, has pled guilty to a charge of possessing child pornography. He will be sentenced in June.

Jonathan David Payne, a former Waukee Cub Scout leader and father of two, has pleaded guilty of possessing child pornography.

and charged with two counts of recieving and possessing child pornography. He was scheduled to go to trial in federal court on April 2. 

According to federal court documents, Payne agreed to a guilty plea on March 26 to a single count of possessing child pornography. The agreement dismisses the charge of receiving child pornography.

The possession convction can carry a maximum punishment of up to 10 years in prison with a maximum fine of $250,000. According to Payne's plea agreement, it's been recommended that the court impose a sentence of 48 months in prison. After his incarceration, Payne will also be required to register as a sex offender.

Payne, a former Cub Scout leader with Pack 181 out of Point of Grace Church, which drew children from Waukee, Urbandale and Clive, was first arrested in October 2011 and found to be in possession of child pornography on his home computer.

Upon his arrest, , according to Bob Hopper, chief executive for the Mid Iowa Council of Boy Scouts.

Payne was initially scheduled for trial on in U.S. District Court on March 5. A continuance was filed by his attorney, Peter Berger of Urbandale, until April 2.
