UPDATED: Latham Laughs at Nuns on the Bus Pistol Whip Comment By Mickelson
Should he say he's sorry? Faith in Public Life and Faithful America is asking the Congressman to apologize for laughing at Mickelson's comment. Latham said Wednesday that anyone who knows him knows he wouldn't condone such rhetoric.
A group is calling on U.S. Rep. Tom Latham, whose current congressional district includes Ames, to apologize for laughing when a conservative talk show host asked him if Congress had the power to pull over Nuns on the Bus and pistol whip them.
According to the Faith in Public Life group, Jan Mickelson on June 22 said, “There’s a bus full of nuns headed towards Washington to lobby against the Ryan plan. Do you guys, do you have any power to pull the Nuns on the Bus over and pistol whip them?”
Latham then said, “It’s always fun to be on your show” and laughter is heard.
Nuns on the Bus of NETWORK, a liberal Catholic social justice lobby, launched its national tour to advocate for the poor and against the Ryan Budget here in Ames at Congressman Steve King's campaign office. The Republican of Kiron faces Ames Democrat Christie Vilsack in the race for Iowa's new 4th Congressional district.
Latham will no longer represent Ames after the November 2012 election.
Latham faces fellow incumbent Leonard Boswell, a Democrat, in the November 2012 election for a revamped Third District seat that includes Polk and Dallas counties.
A statement from Faith in Public Life on Latham's laughter said:
“While Congressman Latham doesn’t express outright support for Mickelson’s statement, he seems unfazed by the suggestion and happy to laugh off this grotesque call for violence on women ... It’s unacceptable for anyone, let alone an elected representative, to tacitly condone suggestions of violence. Rep. Latham should apologize and clarify that he would never support 'pistol whipping' religious sisters.”
Latham said Wednesday, "Jan's comments were an unfortunate and uncomfortable attempt at humor. Anyone who knows me is aware that it goes without saying that I would not condone such rhetoric."
So far more than 15,000 have signed an online petition posted by Faithful America, an interfaith social and political interest group sponsored by Faith in Public Life. The petition asks Latham to “disavow Jan Mickelson's hateful comments and apologize” to Nuns on the Bus.
Jessica Barba Brown, Faith in Public Life vice president for program development said "Mickelson should also apologize but Latham is an elected member of Congress who is supposed to represent all his constituents, including Catholic sisters. He should be held to a higher standard."
What do you think? Does Latham owe anyone an apology? Tell us in the comments.

Ummm - why would he have to apologize for words spoken by someone else? Why is this story not about the person who actually uttered the words than mindlessly re-printing a political hit piece from a hyper-partisan organization?

The answer is: Jessica Barba Brown, Faith in Public Life vice president for program development said "Mickelson should also apologize but Latham is an elected member of Congress who is supposed to represent all his constituents, including Catholic sisters. He should be held to a higher standard."

What a really ignorant group of people. If Faith in Public Life really believes that he was actually calling for violence on women then I guess all I can say is they are really stupid. It is called Rhetoric. It is a way of getting the point across that he supports the Ryan plan. My guess is Latham didn't take him seriously either and therefore felt no need to respond. I am so tired of this politically correct censorship we all know what Mickelson meant and twisting it so you can score political points against Latham is a cowardly act.

Troy, we can debate who is truly ignorant. Latham was not calling for violence against women, but he was egged on by his radio host, to say something controversial. And, he did, maybe innocently, while being baited by this outrageous question- but he was clearly set up for this, and his collusion in his response, well, I laughed, too.. Imo, the only cowardly act was that of the host, twisting it for political points, as you say. Btw, I am so tired, too, of this politically correct censorship, from both sides. But, it seems our nuns, in advocating for social justice, were left on that roadside, if they were ever pulled over on their bus by jan's minions. What kind of social justice is that? Big focus for the Catholic church now-social justice. All are not treated the same, let alone our questioning nuns. The Church now just wants to get rid of them, since their voice was never very important. But, we know they embody social justice in their service, proven over many yrs. Give them a chance, maybe? I support these nuns; they are oh, so brave going against their hierarchy. Much needed. But, I never thought I'd see the day, that nuns would ever feel the need to be so outspoken in their social justice causes, with their church not supporting them. For that church to try to shut up nuns now in finding their voice, well, that is cowardly.

What exactly did Latham say that was controversial? The host didn't twist it for political points, Faith in Public Life did and as far as Jan's minions I guess I am one because I thought it was funny and also disagree with the nuns. Sorry I don't believe in "social justice" just justice. I do not believe in equality of outcome only equality of opportunity. We all start out at different places some do well some don't but where we start at is rarely a predictor of where we finish. The biggest predictor of where we finish has more to do with the ideals instilled in us by our parents than by any amount of social justice. The church used to be about helping the poor not lobbying government to do it and it is really a sad day when We feel we must lobby government for a handout or a hand up instead of just setting that example.

Maybe the church does not support them because they are theologically ignorant. That could be a possibility. This looks more like conquer from within after chasing down the groups mentioned. Nothing faithful about bearing false witness and covertness which is what I found on the Faithful America site. Just a bunch of hateful socialists doing their covert damage once again.

Tom should have the testosterone-filled sacks to stand up to a bully like Mickelson. When you laugh at an ugly joke aimed at a non-dominant group like nuns, women, blacks, gays, Latinos, handicapped it sanctions that hateful and sick behavior. It's called bullying. Take a class, Tom.

This is funny as heck...Come on, it was a joke. Nobody with any common sense can believe that either of them wanted the nuns pistol whipped. It is totally ridiculous to even say such a thing. Kathy Schnell, I personally think your statement was way uglier than anything Mickelson siad. How dare you talk about his testacies like that? That is not only ugly, it's plain rude...and not very lady like…

The reason it is funny is because of the absolute absurdity of it. It is called humor unlike the above comment which wants to censor speech by basically calling it racist in some form, and if that doesn't work then he must be a bully.

It's funny because it suggests nuns don't enjoy being pistol whipped. So to speak.

Liberals offended by mocking the Catholic church is new. Nuns get run down in movies and sitcoms all the time. Ever seen Family Guy? Admitted Liberal Democrat creators. What hypocrisy.
