Candidate Profile: Gene Krumm, Dallas County Auditor
Incumbent Gene Krumm is seeking a third term as Dallas County Auditor. Krumm is running against Republicans Vicki Klein and Troy Weiland in the June 5 primary.
After eight years as Dallas County Auditor, Gene Krumm isn't quite ready to call it quits.
Krumm admits, even as late as last year, his retirement seemed imminent. Instead, he remains at the helm of the Dallas County Auditor's office, where he hopes to serve a third term. He says there are still things he'd like to accomplish.
"I figured this would be my last term," said Krumm. "When I saw that this voter system wouldn’t be in place, I wanted to make sure it would get done. I wanted to see it to completion."
Krumm's pet project, the Precinct Atlas voting program, is an integrated database of voter information accessible at each precinct via laptop. With just a few clicks, precinct volunteers can verify a voter's address and precinct location as well as all pertinent voting background information.
Dallas County piloted the program that's now used in voting precincts around the country. Krumm says he wants to see the next step of the program - a scanner that can read a person's drivers license - in place before he leaves office. The scanners have been included in the budget for the next fiscal year.
Recently, Dallas County Republican party chairman Mike Elam announced that three local GOP primary candidates - including Krumm - did not sign the organization's "integrity pledge."
According to Elam's news release, the integrity pledge is "one measure of understanding the intent of party candidates. We ask that they each express support for the eventual primary winner by not opposing him/her as an alternate party candidate in the November general election.”
One other aspect of Krumm's campaign giving some folks pause is that as of May 31, he has yet to file a campaign finance report with the Iowa Ethics & Campaign Disclosure Board. Reports were due May 19. Krumm will be fined for every day he does not comply.
